The given name Ko Toa means Turtle Island; many say that the given name is due to the islands shape which is meant to look like an upturned turtle while many others maintain it's from the day's when the water surrounding the island was full of turtles and the island was their breeding spot.
Their lives consisted of harvesting coconuts, growing fruit & vegetables and of course sustaining themselves through fishing. In those early days getting to KohTao was a dangerous boat journey from nearby islands or the mainland, if and when the weather and seas permitted, but the residents continued to increase little by little all the same, even when the easy life was hard and without much return.

Unlike a few years ago, guests can get now everything from inexpensive plain wooden bungalows with thatched roofs to stylish up-market places with their own private facilities and swimming pool. It has loads to offer but hasn't lost what attracted backpackers here in the 1st place, its still a petite piece of tropical paradise for everyone to share and enjoy. Departures & arrivals were on the local coconut boats, and even then delays of several days were common place, so back to the hammock and the world of dreams, the boat will come another day. Ko Tao is small; 20 sq kilometer and 50% of that too steep to access. The early 80's brought to KohTao some of the first travellers from Kho Phangan who were looking for something different away from the crowds & masses who were going nuts for the full moon parties on Ko Phangan. |
